Mark is a naturalist based in Cape May, New Jersey. Now mostly retired, he continues to guide at venues he truly loves, with the New River Birding and Nature Festival at the top of that list. He has guided at most of the 25 years of this event.

His naturalist career began 50 years ago with nature walks and teaching near his childhood home in the Maryland suburbs of Washington DC. He worked as a Ranger/Naturalist for the National Park Service for six years before moving into the nonprofit world, leading hundreds of nature walks and tours close to home and around the world, including Central and South America, Africa, Australia, the Antarctic, and many parts of the US. He is interested in all aspects of natural history, with greatest emphasis on birds and monarch butterflies.

His grandfather’s childhood was spent in Richwood, West Virginia, and he has been exploring places in the Mountain State for most of his life, never tiring of the beauty and natural diversity of West Virginia’s ecosystems.
